Today was supposed to be a library trip.
We spent more time running than reading.
Bike.
Bus.
Laughing.
Running.
Flopping.
Sliding.
Singing.
Bus.
Bike.
Books barely got a look in.
—
I see a wonderful almost-two-year-old who is cheeky, silly, curious and energetic.
That makes me happy.
And lately,
a little sad.
—
I’ve been reading about the history of schooling.
I wish I hadn’t.
—
A few months ago I was simply enjoying who he is.
Now I find myself looking ahead.
Wondering what happens to all that curiosity.
—
He’s not my child.
I trust his parents.
I have no authority here.
—
But somewhere between the bus ride home and bedtime,
I realised I’ve hit my first Grandad speed bump.
